Matthew 25:41-45
"...I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ ...‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’"

Our Vision:
In Newport there is a need for emergency accommodation for rough sleepers whilst long term solutions are being sought. A night shelter would fill in the gap in providing safety and refuge for those who do not have the option of temporary or permanent accommodation and continue to struggle with their cycle of homelessness and addiction. Our vision is to offer a safe, warm and secure place that is welcoming to anyone over the age of 18 who otherwise would be forced to sleep rough on the streets of Newport.

Who We Are:
A group of churches committed to helping homeless people in Newport during the coldest months of the year, working as an ecumenical team.

Aims:
Newport Night Shelter aims to minister to the spiritual needs as well as the emotional and physical needs of the homeless by being a visible testimony of Jesus Christ.

Our aim is to work alongside existing organisations such as Wallice Clifford, Caring Hands, Kaleidoscope, Albert Street (direct access hostel run by Solas) and NCC Homeless Officer.

Newport Night Shelter aims to work closely with churches, Christians and existing organisations in and around Newport to meet the needs of the homeless in our area.

How will it work?
The model for the project is deceptively simple. Seven churches each offer one night a week in turn as a venue to host the scheme. The number of places available is determined by the smallest venue. Theoretically, one night a week is manageable for most churches, both in terms of space and disruption to their usual programme.

We plan to achieve this by setting up a temporary night shelter on Friday nights throughout November. This will be a training ground for our volunteers and guests ready to open for the coldest months each evening from the 1st December 2009 until 31st January 2010. We feel this is manageable for our first year.

Why:
What are we called to do?
Isaiah 58:7 nlt“Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help”
